“Searching” is a film focused on the disappearance of Margot Kim, an average teenage girl having a relatively easy life. The movie opens with sequences of Margot growing up and having a normal life when her mother gets diagnosed with cancer. Her mother ends up passing away within the first 10 minuets of the film. Like any teenager, she has things she hides from her dad and their relationship is good on the surface level, later the film excellently shows the pain and honesty of a parent and teen relationship.
The movie is a psychological thriller that throws twists and turns in the most satisfying way possible. As soon as you think you have the movie and plot figured out, the film throws curveball after curveball at you and it keeps you on the edge of your seat, ready to chase the plot along on where it leads you too next. The most exciting part of the movie is the twist ending at the end that is hard to see coming. The movie does a very good job at veering clear of any common movie tropes, although with that said, there are a couple frustrating clichés and frustrating moments within the story where you can predict small things of what is to come next. But, overall, knowing the big picture and larger narrative of the whole story, watching the built-up ending unfold was so satisfying and beyond relieving to see. The movie does a good job of taking their audience on a non-stop, no slowing down thrill ride from beginning to end.
The film was also completely done with modern day camera footage as opposed to traditional camera work and traditional filming, which was a fun perspective to see the story from. Watching the film in this found footage style was a lot less annoying than I expected, as it is very hard to do in movies and usually is a painful experience for me as a viewer. But, the directing and the videography was done excellently I feel. There were not many action scenes to make a shaky camera much of an annoyance.
Overall, the movie was a very fun, thrilling ride with a very talented cast and crew, emphasizing the leaps and bounds of what a parent will go to for their child because of the love they have for them.
